Need a Scary Read for Halloween?

10 Novels That Will Scare the Hell Out of You according to Huffington Post's Julie Buntin.

What will you read? What titles would you add to the list?

I am reading Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle this Halloween. The only other book on this list I have read is The Little Stranger by Sara Waters.

RUNNER (2014)

RunnerRunner by Patrick Lee
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As usual I slipped this tempting thriller right to the top of my list and wasn't disappointed. Author Patrick Lee, who lives in Michigan, knows how to craft a graceful page turner. And although terrible things happen, he has a light enough descriptive touch to keep you reading.

Bottom Line: A clever, well-written thriller that will keep you on the roller coaster to the very end. Recommended.

Sam Dryden has a past in the special forces and experience with off-the-books black op work. After tragically losing his wife and child in an accident five years earlier, he retired and lives a quiet life in a small community on the California coast.

Going for a run on the boardwalk late one night, he collides with a terrified young girl, barefooted and running for her life from heavily armed men whose assignment is to kill her.

Unfortunately Rachel doesn't remember who she is or why she was being held prisoner. Can Sam get them both to safety? And what could an eleven year old girl know that would command such attention? It's complicated but suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride!

Taking off at a run this story manages to pick up speed at every turn. I absolutely loved the clever  solutions the author provided to seemingly unsolvable problems and situations. It's all great fun and, of course, you'll be rooting for our hero and his very unique young friend.

It might have assuaged my fears for Sam's future if I had noticed that the book is subtitled a Sam Dryden Novel.

Disclaimer: A copy of Runner was provided to me by Minotaur Books/Net Galley for review purposes.

Patrick Lee is the author of the three earlier novels featuring Travis Chase that comprise the Breach Series: The Breach, Ghost Country, and Deep Sky. He has also written several movie scripts, which were sold but never filmed, but Runner, his Bourne-like, fast-paced thriller should make it to the big screen some day soon.

Bibliotherapy or Can Books Really Change Your Life?

1/32 Books That Can Change Your Life
I have never placed any faith in bibliotherapy, "the use of books as therapy in the treatment of mental or psychological disorders".

On the other hand, I do think books can change or shift your view of the world. Buzz Feed has just posted 32 Books That Will Actually Change Your World.

I've read 10 and totally agree that they had an immense impact. How many have you read? Do you agree with the choices? Are there other titles you would add? What about To Kill a Mockingbird?

BELLMAN & BLACK (2013)

Bellman & Black: A Ghost StoryBellman & Black: A Ghost Story by Diane Setterfield
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When Net Galley offered me a pre-publication copy of Diane Setterfield's ghost story, Bellman & Black, I immediately jumped the title to the top of my book pile.

Her first offering was The Thirteenth Tale, which I read in 2007 and loved so much that I included it in a Readers' Advisory Workshop I presented for Michigan Librarians. (Apparently there will be a made-for-television movie in the United Kingdom by the end of this year. Vanessa Redgrave stars as the aging author, Vida Winter.)

If you look at reviews already written about Bellman & Black, which goes on sale November 5, 2013, you will find a wide variety of opinions.

The descriptive writing is lovely, but I have to confess that I sometimes had trouble following the narrative and being sure who characters were. The premise of the story, punishing a man many years later for a childhood mistake, seemed extreme although I suppose ghost stories aren't totally logical.

Some of the characters that seemed more interesting than Mr. Bellman, who was driven to work and acquire wealth, were given short shrift, like his daughter Dora. Watching so many good people die too soon because of no other reason than because they were part of William Bellman's life was disturbing.

In a odd happenstance, I had just finished reading Shopping, Seduction, and Mr. Selfridge by Lindy Woodhead, the true story of Harry Selfridge, the founder of London's great department store.  His work ethic and style matched William Bellman's. And both were creating emporiums, although Selfridge's was a testament to life while Bellman's was dedicated to the trappings of Victorian death.

Bellman & Black seems like a story that is not completely fleshed out and it left me feeling unfulfilled. I was disappointed, but perhaps my expectations were set too high by The Thirteenth Tale, which I still highly recommend.

Tom Clancy Dies at 66

Author Tom Clancy died last night (October 1, 2013) at Johns Hopkins in his hometown of Baltimore after a brief illness. He was 66. Several of his best selling books like The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and A Clear and Present Danger were made into successful movies with Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck playing his Jack Ryan character.
