Fiction is broken down into categories such as Notables (Kazuo Ishiguro's KLARA AND THE SUN, Jhumpa Lahiri's WHEREABOUTS, and Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeny's GOOD COMPANY); Highly Anticipated (Marie Benedict, Victoria Christopher Murray's THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN, Joshua Henkin's MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, and Imbolo Mbue's HOW BEAUTIFUL WE WERE); Emerging Voices; (Will Dean's THE LAST THING TO BURN, Charles Martin's THE LETTER KEEPER, and Flynn Berry's NORTHERN SPY); a very long list of Debut authors; and Commercial Fiction including Linwood Barclay, David Baldacci, Alafair Burke, Harlan Coben, Jean Hanff Korelitz, and Nora Roberts. A whole range of non-fiction categories are included as well as several Young Adult titles.

There are so many enticing new titles and authors in the Spring/Summer edition, that although I tried to be selective, it remains to be seen whether I was successful. I've requested a number of titles already!

Fiction is broken down into categories such as Notables (John Banville's SNOW, Marilynne Robinson's JACK, and Jane Smiley's PERESTROIKA IN PARIS); Highly Anticipated (Sue Miller's MONOGAMY); Emerging Voices; Debut (BEFORE THE RUINS, THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB, and SET MY HEART TO FIVE); Commercial Fiction (Jodi Picoult, Carl Hiaasen, and Nora Roberts. (There are also numerous categories for Non-Fiction.)

But I just finished reading Gail Godwin's OLD LOVEGOOD GIRLS and decided I was brilliant because it was amazing. I also read and enjoyed Barbara Delinsky's beach read A WEEK AT THE SHORE.

There are so many enticing new books in Spring/Summer edition, I decided to be selective in what I could realistically add to my 'to read' pile. For me, the top of the list is Emily St. John Mandel's (sequel to STATION ELEVEN) THE GLASS HOTEL(Wished). Others I jotted down include Zoje Stage's WONDERLAND; Mary Kay Andrews' HELLO, SUMMER; and Denise Mina's THE LESS DEAD. I've asked to read Gail Godwin's OLD LOVEGOOD GIRLS and decided I was brilliant because I had already requested and received Barbara Delinsky's A WEEK AT THE SHORE.

BUZZ BOOKS 2019 YOUNG ADULT FALL/WINTER

This year is the eleventh Young Adult Buzz Book. I don't usually read teen books but decided to venture into this popular genre.

The Book Expo's Young Adult Buzz Editor's Panel picks several titles to recommend and the first two were also the ones I chose after reading synopsis and part of a chapter.

Julia Drake's The Last True Poets of the Sea (Hyperion, October 1, 2019) is the story of "a lost shipwreck, a missing piece of family history, and weathering the storms of life." I love that it's set in Maine.

My second choice is Scars Like Wings (Delacorte, October 1, 2019) by Erin Stewart. It's been a year since the fire in which Ava Lee "lost everything. Her parents. Her best friend. Her home. Even her face."

There are 45 fall and winter books for adults in this edition of Buzz Books. A second volume handling the burgeoning young adult titles is available.

The fiction titles that caught my eye included Elizabeth Berg's The Confession Club (Random House, November), a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale from Margaret Atwood titled The Testaments (Nan A. Talese, September), another sequel from Elizabeth Strout called Olive Again (Random House, October), and I have already received copies of T.M. Logan's 29 Seconds (St. Martin's, September) and Lisa Lutz's The Swallows (Ballantine, August).

Personal favorites Louise Penny and Linwood Barclay both have books coming out this fall: Penny's A Better Man (Minotaur, August) and Barclay's Elevator Pitch (William Morrow, September).

In non-fiction, I was interested in Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know (Little, Brown, September), the latest offering from Malcolm Gladwell. Elton John's The Autobiography (Holt, October) and Patti Smith's Year of the Monkey (Knopf, September) both caught my eye too.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR AVID BOOK READERS EVERYWHERE!

Introduction Armchair Book Expo 2017

 Celebrating 10 years of random blogging!

According to my Twitter description I am an actor, director, singer, reader, reviewer, and genealogist not necessarily in that order.

 

Currently I have been on dialysis for almost a year while waiting for a kidney transplant. It has made it difficult to concentrate and enjoy reading. A huge truck delivers my medical supplies once a month.

I love literate mysteries and getting my picture taken with my favorite authors. Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Gamache series is a must read. Start at the beginning with STILL LIFE.

My favorite thing to do is attend and review productions at the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Michigan. It was started twenty-five years ago by actor Jeff Daniels and the quality of the productions is amazing.

My current read is Becky Masterman's A TWIST OF THE KNIFE. It's her third book in the Brigid Quinn series.

My summer plans are to spend time at the lake while reading although I am also committed to directing a show about women's views of their bodies. It's a comedy.

These are some of the lovely women in my book group called IN GOOD COMPANY. We're about eating, drinking, and passionately discussing what we read.

I started my blog, Book Keeping back in 2007 when I was retiring from a career in the library world. I spend time on Face Book, Twitter, and Instagram although my thoughts range beyond books and reading. Lots of my reviews come courtesy of NetGalley.

Dennis Palumbo on Between the Lines Barry Kibrick of NPS talks with Dennis Palumbo, renowned psychologist and Oscar nominated screen writer, about his new book Phantom Limb, fourth in his mystery series set in Pittsburgh featuring Daniel Rinaldi. I have read, loved, and reviewed all four.

Gone Girl (2012)

My Christmas present this past year was a Kindle Fire, to which I have not entirely adapted. I've collected several books to read but still pick up 'real' books when the opportunity presents itself.

But then a couple of exciting things happened. I turned on my Kindle and it immediately downloaded Gillian Flynn's third novel, Gone Girl, which was just released on June 5th! Raves are popping up everywhere and the prediction is best seller lists in a week! On top of that, word is out that her 2009 title Dark Places will be a film. Guess I know what to read next!

The other exciting thing I discovered was something called Buzz Books 2012. The blurb in this weeks Entertainment Weekly read:

This new free e-book offers something usually reserved for publishing insiders: previews of major titles months before they're released. Read excerpts from more than 30 fall books by big-name authors like Dennise Lehane, Junot Diaz, and Barbara Kingsolver.

You can find this online at Amazon.com for free! And I did! Scanning the introduction, which covered other titles likely to be in high demand, I jotted down what appealed to me to take a more careful look. It will be interesting to see if my reading habits will evolve as I pursue the elusive perfect 'read' during the second half of 2012!.

Armchair BEA Holding Twitter Parties

I am so excited! I am signed up to participate in BEA this year and I don't even have to leave home!

Last year, for the first time apparently, BEA made provisions for those who couldn't make the trip to New York City for whatever reason. It's billed as a conference for book bloggers from the comfort of their own chair and I think it's a brilliant idea. Over 150 are signed up already and my name's on the list!

BookExpo America (BEA) is the largest gathering of booksellers, librarians, retailers, and industry professionals anywhere in North America. I was lucky enough to attend in person a number of years ago when librarians were first included. Before that the focus was on retail book sellers.

This is where the buzz starts about new books and what we'll all be hearing about during the coming year.

Librarians and Booksellers Finally Together?

Apparently Publishers Weekly has reported that Book Expo America, which is for booksellers and publishers, and the American Library Association's Annual Conference, which is for librarians and library vendors,  may merge into a single event. Read more about it HERE.
