BUZZ BOOKS FALL/WINTER 2022 - Review

Buzz Books is always an exciting preview of the best of the new books for the season and it's FREE!

First introduced for the 2012 Book Expo America, the FREE digital Publishers Lunch Buzz Books has become the place for both industry professionals and book lovers in general to discover and read about the books expected to spark high demand BEFORE they are published!

Huffington Post recently shared an article that was of great interest to me. I have been writing this book blog for seven years without any real, concrete guidelines. I read what I want (mostly) and write more about how the experience affects me. This makes me feel mightily guilty sometimes. Occasionally I've attempted to be a little more disciplined but it doesn't last.

Then I read this article. It clarified a lot of things for me. Rachel Thompson wrote Reader Reviews Vs/ Reviewer Reviews: Is There a Difference? with authors in mind but it is instructive for a wider audience.

Drowning in Books - Saturday Morning Thoughts

The wealth of enticing new titles roles over me like a wave. Impulsively I reach out and grab a few.

How do I decide? By favorite genre, by name recognition, by bombardment of reviews, by any little detail that connects to my own life.

It underscores the need of authors to create relationships with readers because we are overwhelmed.

A few years ago the Jackson District Library brought Jodi Picoult to town and I was lucky enough to attend and hear her speak. It was a wonderful experience. Everyone felt as though she was speaking directly to them!

Jodi writes about families, relationships, and love presenting ethical and moral questions that draw the reader in.

Now I have learned that she will be speaking on Monday, December 9th sponsored by the Lansing Town Hall Lecture Series. Attached is the PDF for the flier, which includes the entire series. It does state that individual tickets, if available are $30. Interested? Check out the flier HERE.

New Death Threats Against Salman Rushdie

I've never read the Satanic Verses, but apparently there are some very passionate people in the world who object to the words he put to paper. A quarter of a century after publication, militant Muslims have once again threatened Salman Rushdie's life. Read the CNN article HERE.

Sarah Paretsky Will Be in Jackson on May 13 & 14

"On Thursday, April 28, Mystery Writers of America presented its Grand Master Award to Sisters in Crime founding sister Sara Paretsky at the annual Edgar Awards banquet."

On May 13 & 14 the author, who created  the popular V.I. Warshawski mystery series, will be in Jackson for the annual Word Wise Weekend.

An Uncivil Society

The bullying and terrible comments that seem to grow on news articles and other postings are spreading into the world of book reviews. It started with a less than favorable review (but not cruel to my mind) of a self-published book, continued with ill-advised rantings and profanity from the author, and spiraled into mob mentality.
